Byways Cafe

I first discovered this place when I went into the Pearl District looking for neat new things to shoot. Later, when I went looking for a good diner-style cafe, it was the first and nearest to me to pop up on Citysearch. So I went in for the first time.

Unfortunately, this place is the very definition of overrated. They say they have the best burgers in (some geographic area). The truth is they kinda suck, and Roxy's (downtown, on Stark) and Sammy's (uptown, on 23rd Ave.) are both far, far superior.

Not only that, it's a 50s diner, which I generally like.. But the place looks to have been last redecorated and refurbished in 1958. Seriously, the (ugly) postcards and other wall decorations have been there for at least decades; and the napkin holders, among other things, could not have been manufactured later than 1965.

This morning I went in for breakfast. Everybody was having the spinach and peppers mixed w/ bits of German sausage and scrambled eggs special, so I did the same. It was alright. The elderly waitress managed to skip right over my outstretched coffee cup for a refill, either intentionally or not.. certain of the kitchen and waitstaff look like they haven't been replaced in some decades, either. Also, I totally dug where on my bill it was added up thusly:

German Scramble Special $7.75
House Blend Coffee $1.50
Total $8.75

However, given that it's in the Pearl, I'll no doubt find myself there again. And by the very virtue of its location, the wannabe nouveau riche occupants of the Pearl will continue to sing its praises.
