Abel Gance

biography

I haven't seen any of his work. To appreciate how severe it is that any film lover hasn't seen any of his work, here are two quotes about it:

"There is the cinema before and after La Roue as there is painting before and after Picasso."
--Jean Cocteau

"The first film that really impressed me was La Roue."
--Akira Kurosawa

One problem is that it's so damned inaccessible here. Silents, once the core of an indominitable industry during one of the most dynamic periods in our history, became outmoded at the advent of the talkie. 78 years later, there's nought but in the history books about them.
