icine poetry contest - entry 4
by Steerforth

Tennessee
The Civilized Intruders...
Are near the end at last.
They raced towards the future...
To be buried by their past.
The wars they've fought around me...
For reasons just and true.
Their children's blood has stained me...
They paid their fathers' due.
They think they've come so far...
Their pride will be their fall.
They haven't learned a thing...
I'll live beyond them all.
I roared when they were silent...
I ran when they were still.
I've nurtured life for ages...
When all they've done is kill.
So when the last man standing
Has seen his final day,
This weak pretense at order
Will all be washed away
