The Godfather vs. The Shawshank Redemption

The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

vs.

The Godfather (1972)

IMDb's Top 250 Films

For as long as I can remember, these two have filled out the top 2 spots on IMDb's top 250, the best indicator of the movie-going public's favorites.

The Godfather has the higher ranking, but The Shawshank Redemption has nearly 30,000 more votes. Not bad considering The Godfather is an integrated part of American history and pop culture, not to mention sweeping awards back in its day - and The Shawshank Redemption passed unnoticed in theatres, only to resurface and have quite possibly the hugest afterlife in home theatre in movie history.

So, which do you prefer and why?

For me, it's Shawshank all the way, baby. I like Godfather Part II[/b] more than the first (I Robert De Niro), and on many levels was unable to connect with the original Godfather - although I acknowledge its place at the top of the cinematic food chain, more objectively than subjectively; and it's the latter that creates a favorite.

Shawshank on the other hand touches, moves, and inspires. 'Twas always thus, and always thus will be.
